Judy Malonyay BA Dip. Ed.(Music) *Geoff Seymour Prof. Musician
Never played an instrument before but always wanted to? Want an enjoyable way to destress? Want to be part of a local and world-wide music movement? Come and learn the ukukele! It's cheap, portable and easy to learn - just 4 chords and we'll have you strumming. Need your own Uke. The level 2 class is for continuing students or people with some existing experience who want to play with other happy ukulele pickers and strummers in a group. Date: Beginners: Thurs x 8, 9 Feb-29 March, 5.30-7pm, Batemans Bay, $105 Level 2*: Tues x 8, 7 Feb - 27 March, 5.30-7pm, Batemans Bay, $105 (Repeat students - $85) Geoff Seymour: Musical history I started playing the ukulele at about age 14, (nearly 50 years ago!) when a ukulele and an instruction book appeared for sale in, of all places, the front window of the Greek café in the little country town of Ariah Park where I grew up. I taught myself to play the uke from the instruction book, and discovered, from playing with schoolmates, that what I had learned on the uke could be applied to the guitar, and bought myself a third hand guitar. I liked the music of the American folk revival groups, particularly the Kingston Trio, so a 5-string banjo was the next instrument, when I was about 18. Later, in my early 30's I bought a mandolin, which eventually became my 'main' instrument though I continued playing all of them, mostly at home but occasionally in scratch bands, and briefly, in a commercial band. Along the way I absorbed a fair bit of music theory, particularly chord structure and progressions, and learned to read music well enough to be able to follow melody lines. When Judy Molonyay advertised for people to start a ukulele group here in the Bay nearly four years ago, I jumped at the chance, and have thoroughly enjoyed being part of that group and getting re-familiar with the ukulele. If you've always wanted to learn an instrument, the uke is a great choice; having only four strings, it's easier to play, and also cheaper and more portable. If you later decide to move on to guitar or some other instrument, everything you have learned on the uke will be useful, and nothing wasted. DIDGERIDOO
